Personal information

  • Is your name displayed correctly?
  • Are addresses recognizably yours, including older addresses?
  • Are employers or other identity fields being interpreted correctly?
  • Is there personal information that appears to belong to someone else?

An old address is not necessarily an error simply because you no longer live there. The goal is to identify information that is genuinely inaccurate or suggests a mixed file or identity problem.

Account ownership and account status

  • Do you recognize each account?
  • Does the ownership role appear correct?
  • Is an account shown open or closed as expected?
  • Does the payment status match your reliable records?
  • Are collections or charge-offs recognizable and tied to the correct obligation?

If you do not recognize an account, investigate before labeling it identity theft. Genuine identity theft belongs in a different process from an ordinary accuracy dispute.

Balances, past-due amounts, and revolving limits

Compare reported balances, past-due amounts, and credit limits with the most relevant statements or account records available to you. Remember that a credit report may reflect a previously reported balance rather than your balance at this exact moment. Note the report date and the date of the document you are comparing.

For revolving accounts, these figures can also feed a utilization calculation. Keep the accuracy review separate from the planning calculation so you do not confuse “high utilization” with “incorrect reporting.”

Dates, payment history, and remarks

  • Check open and close dates.
  • Review payment-history markers for periods you can verify.
  • Look at the dates connected to delinquency or collection information.
  • Read account remarks rather than relying only on the headline status.

Dates can be easy to misread, so record exactly what the report shows before deciding that a field should be challenged.

Duplicates, similar accounts, and bureau differences

Two entries can look similar without being true duplicates, especially when an account has been transferred, sold, or placed with a collector. Compare account identifiers, creditor names, balances, dates, and remarks. If you have multiple bureau reports, use them as references while remembering that each bureau can display data differently.

Turn review notes into the right next action

After the review, separate your notes into categories: information that appears correct, information that needs more research, information you genuinely believe is inaccurate or incomplete, and financial items that are accurate but need a debt or utilization plan. This keeps the Dispute Center focused on legitimate report questions while Debt Autopilot and Credit Lab handle the planning side.
